Middelburg, the Province of Zeeland

Town Hall, Middelburg

The late-gothic town hall of Middelburg on the city's market square; it was constructed between 1452 and 1520 and was supervised by several generations of the Flemish family of architects Keldermans. The town hall's façade has gothic windows, red-white shutters, smaller turrets and twenty-five statues of Zeeland's counts and countesses. The tower is nicknamed “Malle Betje” (Crazy Betje), a mocking name, relating to the fact it used to run behind the town's other clock tower, the “Lange Jan” (Long John).
