Dome, St. Peter's Basilica

The interior of the 119 metre high dome of St. Peter's basilica is a masterpiece by Michelangelo. The great dome soars above the altar and the baldacchino, sumptuously embellished with mosaic and stucco ornaments. It was brought to completion by Giacomo della Porta and Fontana in 1590, the last year of the reign of Pope Sixtus V.
