Vatican City
Piazza San Pietro or St. Peter's square was designed in the 17th century by the architect Bernini. It features two semicircular colonnades with in the centre an Egyptian obelisk from the 19th-18th Century BCE, that was brought to Rome by the Roman Emperor Caligula in the year 37. The present St. Peter's Basilica, built over the site where the apostle Peter was martyred in the year 64 or 66, was started in 1506 and took over 150 years to complete.
