St. Peter's Basilica

The present St Peter's Basilica, built over the site where the apostle Peter was martyred, was started in 1506 and took over 150 years to complete. Michelangelo was the main contributor; he designed the dome, 119 metres high over the papal altar and St. Peter's tomb.
