Papal States 1808 - 1870
After Napoleon's conquest of the Papal States and the amalgamation of the pontifical army into his own, the Pope, Pius VII, felt that new colours were needed and on 16 March 1808 a flag with the colours yellow and white, derived from the silver and gold colours of the keys of St. Peter, was hoisted. This lasted until 1870 when the Papal States were incorporated into Italy.
