Western Friesland
The Sylroede, the main channel with its lock connecting it to the IJsselmeer in the once prosperous city of Hindeloopen, now a small but very picturesque village of almost 900. Its heyday was between 1650 and 1790 when it had a fleet of over 80 ships and was a member of the Hanseatic League. It has its own dialect, quite different from standard Frisian; the town's name in Hindelooper Frisian is “Hielpen”.
