The Province of Utrecht

Domtoren, Utrecht

The Gothic-style Domtoren (Cathedral Tower) of Utrecht, at 112 metres the tallest church tower in the Netherlands and the city's symbol. It was part of the Cathedral of Saint Martin, or Dom Church, and built between 1321 and 1382, to a design by John of Hainaut, at the spot where the city of Utrecht originated almost 2,000 years ago. The cathedral was never fully completed due to lack of money. When the unfinished nave collapsed in 1674, the Dom tower became a free standing tower.
