The Province of Utrecht

Janskerk, Utrecht

The Janskerk (St. John's Church), on the Janskerkhof in Utrecht; founded shortly after 1040 by Bishop Bernold and dedicated to John the Baptist, it was in the Middle Ages one of the five collegiate churches of the city. In 1656 it was converted to a Dutch Reformed Church, although the library of the University of Utrecht until 1821 remained housed in the choir. Shortly after the French occupation in the beginning of the 19th century, the church temporarily served as barracks for Russian and Prussian soldiers.
