A parade of Schutterijen in Limburg

“Bielemannen”

“Bielemannen”, men with beards of the “Jonge Robele” from Valkenburg carrying axes “to clear the road of obstacles” march in a parade of 60 “Schutterijen”, dressed in their traditional uniforms in the town of Meerssen, near Maastricht; they re-enact the traditions of voluntary citizen militia that used to protect the town in the Middle Ages.
