Leeuwarden, the Capital of Friesland

The Waag, Leeuwarden

The Waag, the building that contained the balance for traders, on the Waagplein, in the centre of Leeuwarden. It was built around 1590; it that time it was mandatory for a market trader to weigh their goods on the scales. This obligation was especially true for (large) dealers in meat and dairy. Friesland produced a lot of butter even then.
