The Province of Groningen

“Het Jagertje”, Onderdendam

The statue of “Het Jagertje” by sculptor Fred Mennens, along the Winsumerdiep canal in the village of Onderdendam, 14 kilometres north of Groningen. In the past ships were pulled here by people called “scheepsjagers”, like this skipper's wife: the old Groningen dialect saying freely translates as “Whoever loves his wife keeps her in view, the skipper said and put her on the line”.
