Franeker, Friesland's cultural centre

Professor's houses

Franeker was a University city from the 17th until the 19th century and still has many elegant buildings from those days. These houses, along the Voorstraat, the main street in the city, were for the professors who taught at the University. The richly ornate “Coopmanshus” (Merchants' house), dating from 1746 and houses a museum about “kaatsen” (Frisian handball), the Frisian national sport.
