Franeker, Friesland's cultural centre
The renaissance City Hall (1591 - 1594) of Franeker on the Raadhuisplein with in the background the famous Planetarium built by a labourer in the wool trade, Eise Eisinga, between 1774 and 1781 in his house, along the street that now bears his name; a clockwork mechanism moves the then known planets (as far as Jupiter) in their orbits.
