Traditions and Folklore in Friesland

An example of the costume as it used to be worn by a wealthy Frisian farmer's couple in the early 19th century on their way to church on Sunday in their “sjees”, an open two wheeled horse-drawn carriage. The farmer dressed in black, while his wife wore a dress in the same colours as their “sjees”. It included an “oorijzer”, a kind of helmet made from copper, silver or even gold, fitting tightly over the head and worn under a lace cap. The wooden spike she has in their right hand is used to collect rings during “ringsteken”, a game played during festivities.
