Zuid-Holland
Holland, the heartland of the Netherlands along the North Sea, has a coat of arms depicting a red lion on a yellow background. In 1948 the Province of South Holland adopted a yellow-red-yellow flag, the colours of the arms. On 24 October 1985 it was decided to restore the old flag of the Counts of Holland, in use since the time of the Crusades, when the lion was supposed to symbolise the “always victorious lion of Judah”. The flag is official since 1 January 1986.
