Franeker - Frjentsjer
The flag of the city of Franeker dates from the early 18th century, made up of four alternating yellow and blue stripes; it was sometimes shown with just two stripes to avoid confusion with the flag of Leeuwarden, which has the same design, but upside-down. Because Franeker merged with the municipality of Franekeradeel (Frjentsjerteradiel) in 1984, its municipal flag seems now to be the only one used, although officially the four-striped city flag is still official.
