Royal Coat of Arms
The Coat of Arms of the Netherlands consists of a blue shield with a gold crowned lion holding a sword and seven arrows, for the Seven United Provinces of the Union of Utrecht (1581). The shield is crowned with the Royal crown and supported by two lions standing on a blue scroll with the text “Je Maintiendrai” (medieval French for “I will maintain”). This is actually the personal Greater Coat of Arms of the monarch with a red ermine lined mantle, topped with the royal crown. It was originally adopted in 1815 by the first king of The Kingdom of the Netherlands, William I, with all lions wearing royal crowns; this was changed to its present format in 1907.
