Prinsenvlag 1572

Prinsenvlag 1572

The Dutch tricolour was first used around 1572 when the Dutch provinces revolted against Spain under their leader Prince William of Orange. The flag was named “Prinsenvlag” (“Prince flag”) after him. The Republic of the Seven United Netherlands was established in 1581, but did not include the Southern Netherlands (nowadays Belgium and Luxembourg, which remained the Spanish (later Austrian) Netherlands.
