Church on a terp

The church tower, built on a “terp”, an artificial hill created probably between 700 and 1200 CE to be safe from high tides and floods, before dykes were built. This is near the village of Easterwierrum (Dutch name Oosterwierum), about 17 kilometres south of Leeuwarden.
