Central Friesland

Canal in IJlst

The Galamagracht (on the left) and Eegracht (on the right), along a canal in the small town IJlst (or Drylts in Frisian), 4 kilometres to the south west of Sneek. It used to be a seaside town, along the now long disappeared Middelzee. It received city rights in 1268 and is one of the eleven cities in Friesland, with a population of around 3,800 people. The Hervormde Kerk (Reformed Church) is in the background.
