Province of Papua, 2003
In late 2001 it was agreed to rename the Indonesian province of Irian Jaya “Papua” with limited autonomy; a seal was designed for the Province of Papua, featuring on a shield, the two snow capped mountain peaks: Puncak Jaya, Puncak Trikora, and Puncak Mandala; a symbol of Trikora (Operasi Trikora was an Indonesian military operation which aimed to seize and annex Netherlands New Guinea in 1961 and 1962); Rice and cotton ears symbolising wealth and prosperity and a scroll with the motto “Karya Swadaya” - Sanskrit for “Work with one's own might”.
