Province of West Papua, 2003

Province of West Papua, 2003

In February 2003 a separate administration for the western area of the Indonesian province of Papua was formed, the Bird's Head Peninsula and surrounding islands to its west, with the capital in Manokwari. A separate seal for the Province of West Papua was designed, featuring a shield with the flare stack of an oil well, symbolising the mineral wealth, a tree and fish, symbolising its jungles and seas, a star and native ornament and, in a circle, the head of the northern cassowary (Casuarius unappendiculatus) a large flightless bird of northern New Guinea. A scroll displays the motto “Cintaku Negeriku” - Indonesian for “My love, my country”.
