Khiva, a former Khanate

Qutlug-Murad-inoq Madrasah

The Madrasah of Qutlug-Murad-inoq, built 1804-1812, opposite the Madrasah of Allakuii-khan. Qutlug-Murad-inoq was the uncle of Al-lakuli-khan. He was buried in this Madrasah, and as he died outside the city and custom prohibited carrying the dead through Ichon-Qala's gates or wall, the city wall was broken to bury him. This was the first two-storied Madrasah in Khiva. Only this monument in Khiva is decorated with a relief of unglazed terracotta.
