İstanbul, the former Ottoman Capital

Topkapı Palace entrance

The entrance to Topkapı Sarayı, one of the major residences of the Ottoman sultans for almost 400 years, from 1465 to 1856. Construction began in 1459, ordered by Mehmed the Conqueror, six years after the conquest of Constantinople. The palace, or the Seraglio, is now a museum.
