Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste
The monument, erected in 1972, to Manuel Jesus Pires in Dili, who was a Portuguese officer and colonial administrator in Portuguese Timor. When the Japanese invaded the colony, Pires fled to Australia and returned with Allied soldiers to fight guerrilla warfare in the Battle of Timor against the invaders. He died in 1944.
