Lhasa, capital of Tibet

Barkhor Square and Jokhang Temple

Barkhor Square and the Jokhang Temple, the most sacred and important temple in Tibet. There are four large incense burners (sangkangs) in the four cardinal directions, with incense burning constantly, to please the gods protecting the Jokhang. There are two large flag poles: The Tashi Tharchen flag-pole, erected in 1986 in the north-west of Barkhor Street and the Juyak Tharchen flag-pole, erected in 1634, in the south-west.
