An iNtfwasa graduation Ceremony in 1972 - Day 2

Senior's kufemba

In the last ritual of the “iNtfwasa” or graduation ceremony for “tangoma”, traditional healers, the senior tangoma perform a “kufemba” ritual where they brush people with a “sizinga” brush, “smelling out” evil spirit bodies that may reside in the people's bodies; they then smell the brush and, when found, “sneeze” the spirit body out. This was done earlier by the initiates, so this may be a check if they did it properly. A frightened small boy waits to be examined.
