Making music in Swaziland

Mahlathini performing

Simon 'Mahlathini' Nkabinde (1938 - 1999), the famous South African mbaqanga singer. Known as the “Lion of Soweto”, Nkabinde was the acknowledged exponent of the deep-voiced, basso profundo “groaning” style that came to symbolise mbaqanga music in the 1960s. He performed here with the Mahotella Queens at the Showgrounds in Manzini, as part of the festivities for Swaziland's five years of independence.
