Paramaribo, Suriname's Capital

Ministry of Finance, Paramaribo

The Ministry of Finance, a monumental brick structure with classical portico and clock tower, built in 1841 and originally intended as the Town Hall. Its tower was modelled on the one of the town hall of Groningen in the Netherlands. In front is the statue of Johan Adolf “Jopie” Pengel (1916 – 1970), Prime Minister of Suriname from 30 June 1963 to 5 March 1969. Starting as leader of the trade union workers and then, in the National Party of Suriname, he became one of the most influential politicians in Suriname at that time.
