Nickerie, Suriname's North-west

SML buildings, Wageningen

The delapidated buildings of the SML (Stichting Machinale Landbouw, Foundation Mechanized Agriculture) in Wageningen, the rice centre of Suriname, on the Nickerie river in the Nickerie District, 54 kilometres east of Nieuw Nickerie and 203 kilometres from Paramaribo. After independence in 1975 it was given to the state, but through a combination of factors - bad management, low prices of rice and deprecated equipment - it became bankrupt.
