Marowijne, Suriname's North-east

House in the village of Bigiston

A house in the village of Bigiston on the west bank of the Marowijne River (Maroni River). It used to be an Indian village called Temeri, with a mixed Arawak and Maroon population; during the civil war in the 1980s most Maroons fled across the river to French Guiana.
