Commewijne, Suriname's Plantation District

Red Palulu, Peperpot

A Red Palulu, Heliconia bihai, a common herb in the jungles of the Guianas, in Peperpot, a former coffee plantation, now a Nature Park in the district Commewijne, on the right bank of the river Suriname. The upward facing flower of the Heliconia family, which acts as a cup, is a natural source of rain water for birds and insects.
