KwaZulu-Natal Province, 2004
The last of the nine new provinces in South Africa to formally adopt a coat of arms, KwaZulu-Natal’s were registered on 03 December 2004. A Nguni shield is white with a green edge at the bottom; the zig-zag partition represents the Drakensberg Mountains, which border the province with Lesotho and the Free State. A bird of paradise flower (Strelitzia reginae) is on the white field. Green is the colour of the landscape. The upper part of the shield is blue, with a white five-pointed star. The crest above it is a traditional Nguni beehive hut and behind the shield are a crossed assegai (spear) and knobkerrie (club), traditional symbols of chiefly authority. The shield is supported by a lion and a gnu (wildebeest) on a green base; the motto in isiZulu, “MASISUKUME SAKHE” (‘Let us Stand Up and Build’), is on a white scroll.
