Bophuthatswana, 1973
A coat of arms for Bophuthatswana had been registered in 1972. It featured a traditional Tswana shield in red over green, with a mining tower, referring to the mines on its territory, three ears of sorghum and an ox-head. A traditional plumed staff, an assegai (spear) and a battle axe were behind it, and two leopards supported it. The motto at the bottom, in Setswana, was “TSHWARAGANANG LO DIRE PULE E NE” (‘If we stand together and work hard, we will be blessed with rain’).
