President of the Republic of South Africa, 1981
On 31 May 1961, South Africa became a republic; a referendum, only open to whites, had narrowly been won - Natal, with a majority of English speakers, had voted against it. Since 1931 the flag of the Governor-General had been dark blue with the Royal Crest, a lion upon a crown and scrolls in both English and Afrikaans (Union of South Africa - Unie van Suid Afrika) above and below it. The first President’s flag was similar: on a dark blue background, it bore the embellished version of the South African coat of arms in full colour in the centre, ensigned with the letters SP (for State President) in gold.
