Crown Colony of Transvaal, 1902

Crown Colony of Transvaal, 1902

The Second Boer War (1899-1902) ended the independence of the South African Republic with the signing of the Treaty of Vereeniging. The Transvaal came under direct British rule and military occupation. It adopted a badge displaying a lion in a landscape, and this may have been used on a Blue Ensign, as was the practice in the other British colonies. It is not sure this was ever used, as no Admiralty warranty was ever issued: only the Admiralty could authorise a badge on blue or red ensigns.
