Colony of Natal, 1870
Natal was proclaimed a British colony on 4 May 1843 after the annexation of the Boer Republic of Natalia. Queen Victoria authorised its first official seal as a British colony in 1846. In 1870 a distinct flag was adopted for the colony: a British Blue Ensign with that seal on the fly. On a gold “Chippendale” frame was a scene with two gnus (wildebeest) running across a plain. The British royal arms were above it and, around the circumference, “VICTORIA DEI GRATIA BRITANNIAR. REG. FD.”. The words “COLONY OF NATAL” were below the frame.
