Cape Colony, 1795

Cape Colony, 1795

In 1795 the Dutch Republic was occupied by the French and the British, who were at war with France, sent an expedition to the Cape to occupy the territory; after a short battle, the British took control and raised their flag. It combined the English red St. George’s Cross on a white background with the Scottish St. Andrew’s Cross (a white saltire on a blue background).
