Western Samoa 1948-1949

After World War II in 1945 the United Nations was established and in December 1946 Western Samoa became a United Nations Trust Territory; with the agreement of the United Kingdom it was again placed under the jurisdiction of New Zealand. On 26 May 1948 Samoa adopted its own flag, designed by the two traditional chiefs Malietoa Tanumafili II and Tupua Tamasese Mea’ole: red with a blue canton and four white stars of the Southern Cross constellation.
