Bhaktapur, Nepal’s best-preserved old city

Bhairavnath Temple, Bhaktapur

Taumadhi Square, southeast of the main Durbar square, with the Bhairavnath Temple, dedicated to Bhairab, the fearsome incarnation of Shiva; the view is from the steps of the Nyatapola Temple, devoted to Bhairab's consort. The three-storied temple, originally constructed with one storey by King Jagat Jyoti Malla, was later remodelled by King Bhupatindra Malla, who ruled from 1696 to 1722.
