Khovd Province

Manchu fort remains

Remains of the walls of Sangiin Kherem, the Manchu fort, built around 1762 in the northern part of Khovd city. The 40,000 square metre compound had several temples, a graveyard and the homes of the Manchu (Qing dynasty) ambans (rulers) who ruled here then. Mongol troops with popular support of the local people liberated Khovd on 7 August 1912, destroyed the Manchu-Chinese garrison and abolished the governance of the Qing-appointed amban.
