State of Pohnpei, 1992

The flag of Ponape (Pohnpei since 1984) was changed in 1992 to represent the 11 municipalities of the State: Sokehs, Kitti, Madolenihmw, U and Nett on the island of Pohnpei and the small atolls of Oroluk, Mokil, Pingelap, Ngatik, Nukuoro and Kapingamarangi. A wreath of coconut leaves rings it, and a cup of “sakau” (kava, the traditional drink) made from half a coconut shell is at the bottom.
