Japanese occupation Caroline Islands, 1914

Japanese occupation Caroline Islands, 1914

On 23 August 1914, at the start of the First World War, Japan declared war on Germany when it ignored an ultimatum to vacate its colonies in China and the Micronesian islands. The Japanese Navy, fighting on the side of the Allies, had seized the German possessions in the Marianas, Palau, Carolines, and the Marshall Islands by October 1914. The Japanese Naval Ensign features the Rising Sun, set slightly towards the hoist, with 16 rays, in red on a white field.
