Republic of Malta, 1988
After the Nationalists won the 1987 election, they decided to change the coat of arms, and in 1988, the new emblem was adopted: a shield with a heraldic representation of Malta’s national flag, surmounted by a golden mural crown, representing Malta’s fortifications. It is framed by a palm- and an olive branch, representing victory and peace and tied with a white ribbon with the words “Repubblika ta’ Malta” (Republic of Malta).
