A Muslim Sunat ceremony

Before circumcision

Avzija Sagdati, a ten-year old boy dressed up for his “Sunat”, a Muslim circumcision ritual in the mountain village of Rečane. The crown on his head says “Mašallah”, an Arabic phrase of joy, praise or thankfulness, meaning “God has willed it”. It is a common expression of people in the Balkans who once lived under Turkish rule.
