Prishtina, Kosovo's Capital City

Serbian Orthodox Church

The Serbian Orthodox Church of Christ the Saviour, started in 1992 under Slobodan Milošević as part of a policy of Serbian nationalism; it was meant to be the biggest church in Kosovo. Its foundations were laid in the campus of the University of Prishtina at a time when Albanian students and professors were expelled from the university. Construction was halted in 1999 during the war and it is now closed off. It has been vandalised, as it is seen as a symbol of the rule of Milošević: various Kosovo Albanian intellectuals have called for its demolition.
