Woraksan National Park, North Chungcheong Province

Buddha statue, Mireuksaji

This standing stone Buddha was the main image of Sakyamuni on the temple site at Mireuk-ri, uniquely facing north. Once part of the cave-styled main hall, it was left alone after the wooden portion of the hall was destroyed by fire. The gigantic cylindrical torso, unrefined craftsmanship, the gat (Korean style hat) on the head and the rough treatment of the robe all demonstrate the Chungcheong provincial style of the early Goryeo Kingdom.
