The Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi, the founder of the Franciscan order who lived from 1182-1226. The basilica is built into the side of a hill and comprises of two churches, one built on top of the other; the Lower Church was started in 1228 and the Upper Church two years later. Both are lavishly decorated with frescoes. There is also a crypt where the remains of the saint are interred. The basilica is one of the most important places of Christian pilgrimage in Italy.
