Siena, Toscana’s gem
The Palazzo Pubblico (town hall), on the Piazza del Campo, the magnificent central square of Siena. Construction of the palace started in 1297; it was built to house the republican government (the Podestà and Council of Nine) when Siena was an independent city state. The Torre del Mangia, the campanile or bell tower, was built in 1338-1348; at a height of 88 m, it was one of the tallest secular towers in mediaeval Italy and has the same height as Siena’s Duomo cathedral.
