Siena, Toscana’s gem

Duomo mosaics

The golden mosaics in the upper gables of the 13th century Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta (Most Holy Mary of Assumption), the Duomo of Siena. They were made by Venetian artists based on drawings of 1878 by the Sienese painters Luigi Mussini and Alessandro Franchi and were added during extensive restorations. They depict the Presentation of Mary at the Temple, the Coronation of the Virgin, and the Nativity.
